YCN Orange Award
Caroline receives a YCN commendation in this year’s 07/08 Awards for
the work she did on the brief set by Orange, ‘Create your vision of
future communications’.
“I primarily chose this particular YCN brief partly because the broad
nature of its content meant there was a degree of freedom in the manner
in which it could be answered, and because the subject matter also
appealed to me.
Given the relatively short amount of time that I had to do the
project, I felt that it was important to establish direction as soon as
possible. Having thoroughly researched Orange as a company and having
looked at the historic use of telecommunications and its development up
to today, I arrived at the concept early on. Writing a poem/story and
illustrating it as a book, reflected an area in publishing that I would
like to work in.
After completing the initial rough storyboard, I was aware that the
project might lend itself to animation. The time factor and the
potential workload, however, convinced me that my best option would be
to persist with a book. Designing a cut-out book was a novel idea to
make the presentation more interesting.
Using a dip-pen and ink to produce line drawings and colouring these
on the computer with a limited palette, meant that I could produce a
relatively large number of illustrations in a short period of time. All
text was handwritten and I really enjoyed the variety of letter
placements and combinations. This, together with the design of the
characters perhaps is a strong element of the book. I also attempted to
make the book relevant to Orange by presenting designs for future
telecommunication products.
Of all the projects I have done throughout my degree, this flowed
better than any other and I was thrilled to be commended by Orange and
the YCN."
The work is currently on display until 27th June at the North East
Wales Institute final year degree show, 49, Regent Street, Wrexham, and
will be part of the YCN’s Live Event in central London later in the
summer and their 08/09 annual.
